Blut aus Nord is a french progressive black metal band.
The name Blut aus Nord is German and literally translates to “Blood from North”, but is not grammatically correct German. It is possible that the band intended for it to mean “Blood of the North” (“Sang du Nord” in French, “Blut des Nordens” or “Blut aus dem Norden” in German).
Vindsval, the vocalist and guitarist, made the following statements:
Blut Aus Nord is an artistic concept. We don’t need to belong to a specific category of people to exist. If black metal is just this subversive feeling and not a basic musical style, then Blut Aus Nord is a black metal act. But if we have to be compared to all these childish satanic clowns, please let us work outwards [from] this pathetic circus. This form of art deserves something else than these mediocre bands and their old music composed 10 years before by someone else.1)
When asked about why Blut aus Nord has avoided the “political end of things” he answered:
It shows little consideration for music, and art in general, to mix it with such futile concerns. Nevertheless I sympathize. When talent is lacking, we must find other ways to try to exist…2)
In addition to rejecting Satanism, BAN have distanced themselves from nationalism - another common black metal theme - instead recognising a kinship with “environmentalist black metal” groups such as Wolves in the Throne Room.3)4)
